This week we are celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday on Friday. We are reading, reading, reading all week long. We are learning about his life, his stories, and his characters throughout the week. Don't forget to send in any Dr. Seuss books you might have at home, we are adding to our library this week!

Also, we are studying some non-fiction and learning a bit about plants. Did you know that a pumpkin is a fruit? We will be reading a text that teaches how a pumpkin grows. While we read we will be sequencing and identifying the important information in the text. Ask your child what they know about pumpkins!

In math, we are taking our test on Tuesday. We have been really working hard on double digit addition and subtraction. Please keep up on the homework and ask your child to explain "HOW" they found the answer. Also, we began multiplication and division. This can get a bit tricky, we are taking our time understanding this concept.

We began a new behavior system last week. It is a computer based system on http://teach.classdojo.com/login. Please check it out, it is a way to give positive and negative points based on behavior. It works so well, your children are so excited about all the points they win each day. They are working to earn more points daily! Keep it up!

It is Valentine's Day in Room 115 and we have a lot of fun ahead! Today we will be learning about the history of Valentine's Day. There is a fun video on youtube (the link is below) that shares the history and some fun facts about Valentine's Day. I know I learned some new things when watching it.

Today, we will exchange valentine's and make some valentine's crafts to take home and share with those valentines that are not in the classroom. Thanks to those that donated the valentine's goodies for the gift bags going home with the kids today!

Also, this week we do not have any spelling words. We do not have school Thursday or Friday and the next Monday, so the homework packet can come back to school on Tuesday (it is just math). Please keep reading each day!

We are continuing our study of Black Americans and our Presidents as we continue through February!

Weekly News!

I bet everyone enjoyed watching the big Superbowl game last night and I hope we didn't stay up too late...this week will be a busy week with a Valentine's Dance on Friday night!

Do not forget that parent-teacher conferences are on Tuesday night, please let me know if you are not sure of your appointment time. It was really great to see so many families last week, this Tuesday will be great too!

We are still working to collect coins for our Jump Rope for Heart. Please send in any loose change you many have around the house, the collecting jug is in the front lobby of the school.

Also, we are running/walking two miles a week for the Flying Pig. Make sure to help your child fill in their Hog Log. If you need another, please let me know.

This week we are beginning to subtract and find the differences in story problems. You will see that the homework might get a bit more challenging. Please keep working hard at home, as we are becoming much smarter with our numbers.

Conference Time

Good morning everyone! This week will be busy. Tomorrow night we begin parent-teacher conferences. Please contact me if you are not sure when to come and visit. You all should have received report cards on Friday, please let me know if there are any questions or concerns.

This week is a reading review week. We will spend the week reading a variety of fiction and nonfiction stories practicing our reading strategies: predicting, summarizing, questioning, identifying author's purpose, and inferring while reading. Ask your child which stories they are enjoying the most. Discussing the stories at home will help to reinforce the skills we are working on here. Also, a new reading log will be sent home on Wednesday for the month of February. Please keep up to date with the reading each night. Below are some great questions to ask your child before, during, and after they have read at home.

1. What do you predict might happen in this book? Do you have any predictions about the characters or plot?
2. Do you have any questions about the book? Remind them to begin questions with who, what, why, when, where, how,
3. How do you know....?
4. Tell me about the character, setting, plot, main idea....
5. What did you learn about...from this book?
6. Why did you choose to read this book?
7. Why do you think the author chose to write this book?
8. Would you recommend this book? To whom? Why?

These are just some questions to practice engaging with a text and boost reading comprehension. Also, please remind your child to read the stories sent home weekly to practice reading fluency as well.

In math, we are completing our unit 5. We have studied many 2-d and 3-d shapes. Thanks to those who brought in 3-d solid objects to share. We had a variety of objects to discuss and observe. Please continue to reinforce these skills by discussing the math homework at night with your child.

Weekly News!

Starting last week we began walking/running to build up our stamina for the Flying Pig marathon! We will be using the gym to get ready and track our milage for the marathon on the 5th of May. Please check your child's folders as we are sending home notices each time they complete a mile. Then keep track on your Hog Log! Also, we are working for Jump Rope for Heart, we will be jump roping throughout the week as well. Wow, we will be fit school come spring. We are asking students to bring in any loose change to help us donate to the cause. There is a jug in the front lobby for all those coins.

On top of all this movement, we are starting a Weekly Reader fundraising campaign. Please check your child's folder on Wednesday, as all the info will be inside. Please encourage your child to get some addresses as we love our Weekly Readers and this gives us a chance to get them for FREE!!!

On Friday, you will receive your child's report card and next week we begin conferences. If I have not received a conference note, I added you to the schedule. You will get your conference time tomorrow, please let me know if you can attend or if you need to make an alternate arrangement to meet. It would be so great to see everyone!

This week we are reading a biography of Dr. George Washington Carver's life called A Weed is a Flower. We will be working on inferring and identifying fact and opinions while reading. Our spelling words are all words with comparative endings, please check the homework to see the list. In math, we are working on geometery. This means we are using straightedges to create shapes, line segments, polygons, and quadrangles. Please review the homework, as next week we will be taking the math test on these concepts.

We had the day off yesterday to celebrate Martin Luther King's birthday! This short week we have lots of fun planned.

In math, we are working on identifying 2-D and 3-D shapes, attributes, and line segments. We completed our unit 4 math tests last week, check your child's folder this week for the math assessment sheet.

In reading, we will focus on predicting before, during, and after reading while sequencing the text. Our spelling words are all long vowel patterns (i, ie, igh, and y). Please focus on the sounds while working on the spelling words, they will help us spell other words with these same patterns.

We mailed our letters last week! I sent home any letters without addresses, please send them from home. I never knew we would be so excited to visit the mailbox! This week, we are working on creative writing and following the complete writing process. Ask your child what type of writing they are working on at school!

Please don't forget to send in the conference slips so I can arrange a day and time for you to come and see how wonderful your child has been working in school!

Happy Monday!

This week we will be busy, busy, busy. In reading, we are focusing on a folk tale about a shrewd spider and his tricky turtle friend. We will be comparing and contrasting while summarizing in a whole group. In small groups, we will work on compound words, reading non-fiction texts and learning about text features. Our spelling words are compound words, please continue to practice them at home. The spelling homework is always so much fun to grade, especially the letters and stories!

In math, we are practicing our double-digit addition with many different strategies. We have worked on estimating numbers to check our addition answers. Encourage your child to add double-digit numbers with mental math (adding the tens first and then the ones) and pencil/paper (when you carry the one). On Thursday, we will have our unit test. Please continue to practice with the homework packet.

Also, we will be celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.'s this week. We do not have school on Monday the 16th.

Lastly, we are sending our letters this week! Please write down the address of the recipient so we can address the envelopes this week. Have a great week!

Welcome back to school! We had a great first day back and we are excited to continue learning. This week we are focusing on drawing conclusions when reading, visualizing text, and practicing our long O word patterns. Also, we are creating friendly letters to send out to someone special. If you have any extra postage stamps, it would greatly help if you could send them in so we can post our letters next week! Also, we continue to work on adding double digit numbers and estimating with mental math. Please encourage your child to try to estimate number values (for example 28 can be estimated as 30). Don't forget to check the calendar and see what is to come! Have a great week!!

This week we will be learning about the winter holidays! Tomorrow we will spin the dreidel, write an acrostic Hanukkah poem, and read about the Hanukkah traditions (it is the first day of this 8 day holiday). Wednesday we will spend some time learning about Kwanzaa an African American celebration of culture, and the rest of the week we will learn about Las Posadas (a Mexican holiday), Ramadan (a Muslim holiday) and Christmas too. Please check your child's folder for a magazine we will send home will information on these winter holidays. Enjoy, less than a week left until we have our holiday break!

Don't forget we have a class party on the 23rd, please bring in a 100 piece puzzle that is wrapped and marked for either a girl or boy. Also, if parents would like to join us, let me know and I can pass it on to our room parent. Lastly, please send in any holiday treats for the goodie bags!

Dear Santa, this Christmas my list is quite small.

In fact, I need practically nothing at all.

My list is so short and so easy to read

because there's just one thing I actually need.

A reindeer for Christmas is all I require;

a reindeer, of course, who's an excellent flier.

I really don't care if it's Dasher or Dancer.

I'm okay with Cupid or Comet or Prancer.

Please don't think I'm greedy; I only want one.

You won't even miss him, and I'll have such fun.

I promise I'll feed him and treat him just right,

and take him out flying around every night.

You see, I'm not selfish. So for my surprise

this Christmas, please bring me a reindeer that flies.

But if my request is a bit much for you,

I guess that an iPod will just have to do.

Holiday Poem for the Week!

Poor Santa got stuck in our chimney.

I know it sounds weird, but it's true.

His feet made it down, but his belly

was one size too large for the flue.

His reindeer are up on our rooftop.

His sleigh is still loaded with toys.

And Santa, that kindly old fellow,

is making a whole lot of noise.

We called the police and the sheriff.

They showed up with ladders and cranes.

They brought all their winches and pulleys,

plus bungee cords, cables and chains.

They're working right now to remove him

by hoisting him slowly back out.

It might take all morning, for Santa

is more than a little bit stout.

If you don't have presents this morning,

we're sorry that you have to wait.

But Santa's still stuck in our chimney.

He may be a day or two late.

Until then, please hide all your cookies.

Though Santa may find this severe,

at least then he'll fit down the chimney

when he comes on Christmas next year.

End of the week news...

This week we were very busy reading folk tales, legends, and fables. We compared and contrasted many stories while reading "into" the stories by inferring details. Also, we worked on blending and segmenting words with long "a" vowel digraphs (ai and ay). It was great to see how wonderful we all did on the spelling tests! I can tell there is a lot of work done at home to practice the spelling words, nice work!

We finished writing our fairy tales and soon there will be a slide show on here to show them off, check back after the weekend to see our writing. There are a lot of creative writers and illustrators in Room 115. We began to conference with partners to revise and edit our writing. Also, we are using ink as a publishing tool, it is all very exciting.

In math, we continue to practice part/part/whole number stories, change to more number stories, counting coins with exact change and the added challenge of making change, and reviewing telling time to 5 minutes. Please work at home to challenge your child, see if they can tell you the time 20, 30, or 45 minutes from now. I sent home the results of the math test, please sign the forms and send them back. Also, if you have any questions please contact me. We do weekly math fact practice tests, keep challenging your child to do mental fact practice (memorize those facts).

The holidays are coming soon. We are having our holiday shopping experience this Thursday at 1:50, please send in some dollars for a fun shopping trip. Also, don't forget to send in a wrapped 100 piece puzzle with either girl or boy marked on it by Dec. 23rd. We will be exchanging puzzles at our holiday party on the 23rd at 1:20!

Another Great Week!!

It seems like time speeds up during this time of year. This week was a blur of activity! We worked hard on learning plural nouns (some with interesting endings: 'ves', 'ies', and 'es'). We read stories and determined cause and effect for various events in the stories. Also, we began to create our own fairy tales. Take a second and ask your child what makes a fairy tale different from a narrative. They have magic and good characters vs. evil characters.

In math, we worked so very hard to count money and determine the correct change for items. This is an ongoing skill we practice so please encourage your child to identify the change needed in real life situations. We began to solve whole and part math problems, continued working on finding the rules to math patterns, and measured time with an analog clock frequently.

We have had two "mystery guest readers" visit us. Please let me know if you would like to join us, it is super fun to see who is coming into the room! We have books you can read or you can bring your own. Here are a photos of Donovan's mom reading to the class this morning!

We are Writers!

This year we have been working in a writing workshop format. Students have been working to complete writing projects and they have been able to work independently on the writing process. We do spend thirty minutes a day writing, sometimes it is an assigned topic, but mostly it is an idea that comes from our writer's brain. We all have them and we need to use them! Please encourage your child to look at the world as a writer. Everything we see, hear, feel, taste, and smell can turn into a story or a non-fiction report. When you take family field trips, experience new things/places, ask your child how a writer would share that experience. Encourage them to remember or to write/keep a list of different writing topics so they are always prepared for our daily writing. Thanks and I know you will enjoy reading their journals at the end of the year!

Conference Time

Room 115 learned about Veteran's Day. Please read the magazine we sent home and the informational text that came home with your child this week. Ask them "what can we do to say thanks?" We had a fabulous discussion and learned that many friends and family members are in the military. I want to extend a special thanks to everyone who has fought for our country and our freedom.

This week flew by quickly. We had our first math test today, parents you will be receiving a sheet with each math skill and your child's performance in the next Wednesday folder. Also, we visited the Book Fair this week. Monday is the last day for shopping, so bring in your money if you would like to take some books home! Lastly, next week is Red Ribbon Week. This week we have been counting money! Yesterday we worked on counting one, ten and hundred dollar bills. Today we worked in partners to count coins. PLEASE review all coins with your child, have them practice counting by tens, fives, and ones. It was so neat to see the class work hard on identifying and determining how much money they had. Keep up the great work!

I cannot believe how fast the year has been! It is 1/8 of the way completed. We sent home interim reports, so please check your child's folder. If you have any concerns, please contact me 943-3853 or wolff_megann@westcler.org.

This week we have studied the plants and animals living in the desert, identified and spelling words with inflected endings (ing, ed, and s), worked on telling time to the minute on an analog clock, practiced our addition facts, used tally marks, identified the main idea and details in an expository text, and wrote a report about our neighborhoods (these are in the writing process still). Please discuss these topics with your kids. Challenge them to tell the exact time throughout the day. They are always so excited to share the time with me at school, keep it up at home!

Second Week is a Success!

Happy Friday to all my Second Grade Families!

We have had a wonderful week in Room 115. I have to say that we have been very busy on writing sentences (ask your child about subjects and predicates), reading independently and with a buddy, monitoring our reading, and working on number sense. You may have noticed some math papers coming home. This week we worked to gain a better understanding of the numberline. We practiced greater than and less than with many activities!

In writing, we completed our autobiographies (I sent those home on Friday). It was so fun to learn about all my students, make sure you read the comments I wrote in your books! We began writing a personal narrative about our best friends too. This coming week we will work to complete the personal narratives. I'll post some student work when we get closer to publishing our writing.

We took our first spelling and reading test today, way to go! I was very impressed, most of the class completed their spelling homework. Make sure you keep that spelling contract at home or in your folder. We will be using those every single week for spelling homework. Please let me know if you need another one.

New spelling words will come home on Monday and please don't forget to update that reading log each night! It is due on the 30th.

Number Sense at Work!

We have been working on number sense this week! We have bee counting by 1s, 2s, 3s, 5s, and 10s in partners, independently, and as a whole group. Here we are comparing and ordering numbers least to greatest. Challenge your child to count by 2s and 3s at home or give them a number like 58 and have them count by 10s from that number on (58,68,78,etc...). Happy Counting!!!

Hello Room 115 Friends!

Today we sent home two sets of homework. We decided to start with spelling and reading homework. Please check your child's folder as you will find a spelling contract with directions attached, a spelling list for the week, and a spelling notebook. Also, you will find a reading log for the month with directions attached. Please let me know if you have any questions and happy homework! One last thing, we will turn in the spelling homework on Friday and the reading log on the 30th of September.

Kids at work!

Room 115 formed a community this week by working together. We played games to get to know each other and we worked on solving problems in partners and teams. Also, we read the story Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. It's about a little mouse who is teased at school because her name is very long. We discussed our names,while reviewing vowels and consonants. Here are some students working together to count the letters in their name, identify the vowels and consonants, and count the syllables.

Wow!! It sure was a busy day. I am so proud of Room 115, we had an outstanding first day. Parents please make sure you read all the information in your child's orange folder. This folder must come back to school each day. There are a lot of important papers that need to be returned, please let me know if you have any questions. I know the staff is working to improve our transportation procedures, thank you very much for being patient while we work out the kinks. It would be great if you quizzed your child on their four digit number so when they hear/see it on the screen they know to line up at the door. Please check back tomorrow, I'm hoping to take some pictures of student's work...hopefully my camera battery will survive the day. Have a great night!

Amelia Elementary

Second grade is an important academic year for your child. Attendance is VITAL for your child because he/she will be in ongoing small instructional groups that meet daily.
If your child is late for school you must check them into the office so that they can get a pink tardy slip.

If your child is ill:

Remember to send a note to the teacher on the next school day with the reason for his/her absence.
Please call the school office before 10:00AM when your child is going to be absent. If it is before 8:00AM, call 943-3804 and leave a message stating your child’s name, homeroom teacher’s name, your name and the reason for the absence.

Classroom parties:

We will be having a Winter Party on Friday December 23^rd. We will not be having a Halloween or Valentine’s Day party, but we do have special activities during the day.

We love to celebrate birthdays in Room 115 so treats are acceptable. You may only send in PACKAGED treats so that I can find the ingredients on a label to protect children that have food allergies. No homemade treats can be given out.

Fees

Please remember to pay your child’s school fees. This year the price is $50.00. If you are sending a check please make it payable to Amelia Elementary along with your child’s name in the Attn: line.

Report Cards

Your child will bring home a report card at the end of each quarter. Please sign and return the report card envelop. Reports are for you to keep.

Note: School fees must be paid before report cards can be sent home.

Picking up your child

Please contact Mrs. Walker to receive your pick-up tag and drop off/pick up information.

Bus

We do not have many bus riders this year. Please contact the office with questions.

Conferences

There are 2 scheduled conference times. The first one is November 15^th or 21^st and the second one is February 7th.

Volunteering

A classroom is not complete without parent help. Please consider volunteering for any amount of time during the week. Your child will LOVE to see you in our classroom!
You must be fingerprinted and approved before you will be able to work in the classroom. Information in the office.

Guest Reader Program

Another way to volunteer is to read a book to your child’s class. Guest readers can be moms, dads, step-parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, older siblings, or anyone that is special to your child.
All the guest reader has to do is email/call me to schedule a day/time and bring in their favorite book to read to the class.
The best part is that it will be a total surprise to everyone…even your little one!

Reading

Reading Street: Reading Street is a series that Amelia Elementary began last year. It will help build readers through motivating and engaging literature, scientifically research-based instruction, and a wealth of reliable teaching tools. This program allows for differentiation instruction with a strong emphasis on ongoing progress-monitoring. Lastly, Reading Street prioritizes skill instruction, to assure students are focusing on the right reading sill at the right time for every student.

Book orders

Scholastic Book orders will come home throughout the year with GREAT literacy choices. The selection of books varies in prices but they are very reasonable and often cheaper than the book stores. Your order also gives us free books for our classroom.
If you order books you MUST write a check to Scholastic Books. I am not allowed to accept personal checks or cash.

Writing

This year your child will be producing many types of writing. He or She will have a writing folder where their work is kept and revisited throughout each unit of study. At the end of each unit your child will publish one piece of writing to display in the classroom and take the rest home to share with their family.
Tiger Tales: This year we will have a special friend in the classroom…Tanner Tiger. Your child will take Tanner home for the weekend and write about what they did with tanner. On Mondays the student who takes Tanner home will share their page from the Tiger Tales Binder with the class.

Math

Our Math program is Everyday Math. This math program is very interactive and will help your child connect math concepts to the real world.

Homework

Homework will be given out on Mondays in your child’s orange Parent Communicator/Homework folder. Please return their homework on Fridays. The folders should be returned daily.

Wednesday /Parent Communicator Folder

Our school will continue the Wednesday folder program. Each week on Wednesdays your child will bring home important school and PTA information in their parent communicator folder. Please remember to return the orange folder daily.

Name change?

You probably noticed that my name has changed from Miss Michael to Mrs. Wolff. On July 30th, I got married! So not only am I teaching a new grade, I have a new name. Here I am at the ceremony in Chicago! Can't wait to start the year as Mrs. Wolff!

Back to School!

Wow, the school year is right around the corner! I visited the school today and moved into a new second grade classroom. It is really neat to unpack and get ready to begin a new year. Keep checking back because I will post some new pictures of the room as it blossoms into our new home for the year.
